About Fox Islands Wind
Fox Islands Wind (FIW) is a 4.5 MW wind generation facility located on Vinalhaven Island in Penobscot Bay, Maine.
Fox Islands Wind, Est. 2008
The Fox Islands took their first step towards energy independence in 1975 by forming Fox Islands Electric Cooperative (FIEC), a rural electric cooperative, with a loan from the USDA Rural Utilities Service. The Fox Islands added renewable energy beginning in 2008 when the members of FIEC voted 98.7% in favor of developing a wind power project to serve the Fox Islands. The resulting generating facility, owned and operated by FIW (a wholly owned subsidiary of FIEC), is a three-turbine, 4.5 MW onshore wind farm that serves the remote island community 11 miles off the coast of Maine.

The FIW wind farm provides a pathway for the Fox Islands community to increase its resilience, enhance energy security, and achieve energy independence.
At the center of what we do.
Local Wind Energy
The wind farm serves as an energy source for North Haven and Vinalhaven Islands, reducing the community's dependence on external energy suppliers.
CO2 Reduction Data
Every MW of energy FIW generates decreases CO2 generation from the Fox Islands’ energy grid.
Community Empowerment
By generating our own clean energy, the Fox Islands community takes control of its energy destiny, reducing vulnerabilities and ensuring a more secure and sustainable energy future.
